Coming out of WWII, the MOD realized a robust and reliable dive watch would be absolutely necessary for diving units. At the time, Rolex was the clear leader in waterproof watch technology, catching the attention of the MOD and marking the first appearance of a military-issued Submariner.The Rolex ‘MilSub’ Submariner was produced by Rolex and issued to divers by the British Ministry of Defense. These Rolex MilSub watches were used by both “clearance” divers who engaged in shallow, attack-type swimming as well as deep, mine-hunting divers.
Throughout the 1970s, military specification Rolex Submariners (often referred to as ‘milsubs’ by collectors) were delivered to the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) by the Rolex Watch Company and made available to both the UKSF Special Boat Service (SBS) and Special Air Service (SAS) divers.
