Embroidery. I work with a variety of threads and stitch onto a pale neutral coloured cotton calico or linen blend fabric. I think of stitching a bit like drawing and painting with thread; drawing shapes, making marks to create texture and building up areas of colour and pattern.
I love the possibilities of embroidery and the range of marks and textures that can be built up with stitch. My patterns tend to utilise back stitch or stem stitch to 'draw' outlines, before using straight stitches of varying lengths to fill in space and add areas of pattern.
